Tools & Resources
Birth families now, more than ever, have quite a few tools and resources available to them. There are different tools and resources for each phase of their placement experience ranging from counseling, attorneys, search angels and specialists.
Birth parents may find their path to healing eased by time spent with a counselor or therapist. It is suggested that one finds a counselor or therapist that has specifically been trained or has established experience with adoption so that they can provide the proper grief counseling that birth
parents face post partum. Additionally, some areas have local groups or chapters set up for birth parents to network and share their adoption related experiences. Many find these to be helpful both before and after adoption placements.
Adoption.com has a list of Professionals and a Glossary listing adoption terminology to help birth families, as well as tips for creating Life Books and scrapbooking. Many birth mothers enjoy creating life books to give to their babies when placing so that their baby has something special from them to keep with them always.
Many members of the birth family, whether birth parent, sibling
or grand parent will search over time, once the child has reached 18 years of age. At that time, the birth family members can register on adoptive reunion registries in hopes that their loved one placed has registered and can then be reunited. Sometimes the aid of a search angel or search and reunion specialist can be enlisted to perform the search and act as intermediary, establishing contact and reuniting the families.
Thankfully, records are not as closed as they once were and more and more states are releasing the original birth certificates to the adopted children. This makes locating parents much easier, as does the increase in open adoptions rather than the once closed adoption circuit. Tools and resources are available, and with a little guidance, many will find what they are looking for.
